This Coverage is Designed For
(OVERVIEW)
From mountain bike trail advocacy groups to governing sport bodies — if your organization runs on a board and a volunteer base, this is for you.
Trail advocacy groups and trail societies
Mountain bike trail advocacy groups, trail societies holding land agreements and active transportation organisations — where certificates and additional insured wording for municipalities, Crown land and private landowners are part of the work.
Racing, recreational and junior clubs
Racing clubs and teams, recreational riding clubs and social ride groups, junior development programs and school teams — including clubs running their own events and race series, and clubs with volunteer ride leader programs.
Governing bodies, associations and co-ops
Governing sport bodies and provincial associations, bike co-ops and community repair shops — organisations carrying real exposure whether or not they have paid staff.
What’s Covered
Directors & officers
Protects board members personally for decisions made on behalf of the organisation. Standard.
Commercial general liability
Third-party injury and property damage arising from your activities. Standard.
Professional liability
For advice, instruction and programs your organisation delivers. Standard.
Property
Clubhouse, storage, tools, timing equipment and gear. Standard.
Ride leader exposure
Volunteer ride leaders sit in an awkward spot — acting on behalf of the club without being employed by it. Our program names them specifically. Tell us how your rides are run and we will confirm how they are treated.
Optional add-ons
- Abuse liability for junior programs and youth camps
- Event coverage for club race series and ride days
- Volunteer accident coverage
- Non-owned auto for volunteer vehicles on club business
- Cyber for membership databases and online registration
- Employment practices liability where the organisation has paid staff
- Wildfire risks and exposures
What’s not covered
- Members’ own bikes and their own injuries — individual riders need their own coverage
- Workers’ compensation for paid staff — statutory through your provincial board
- Unsanctioned trail building by members, staff and volunteers

04Cycling Club & Association Insurance FAQs
Still have a question from your board?
Ask us anything about your organisation, your programs or your land agreements. No cost and no obligation.
We are covered through our provincial association. Do we need our own policy?
Sometimes, and sometimes not. Association programs typically cover sanctioned activities confirmed through the provincial body, which can leave gaps around unsanctioned rides, your own property, board decisions and anything outside the approved activity list. We will review what you already have and tell you honestly if you are sufficiently insured.
Can a board member be personally sued?
Yes. Incorporation offers protection but it is not absolute, and directors of non-profits can be named personally in claims relating to decisions they made for the organisation. Directors & officers coverage exists for exactly that.
What does the complimentary review involve?
You share basic details about your organisation, a broker is assigned to you personally, and we review your exposures with your directors and officers. There is no cost and no obligation to purchase.
We are a small club with no paid staff. Are we too small for this?
No. Volunteer-run organizations carry real exposure, sometimes more than staffed ones, because responsibility sits with people who never signed up for it. Small clubs are a normal part of this program.
Our volunteer ride leaders — are they covered?
Ride leaders are named specifically in our program because they sit in an awkward spot: acting on behalf of the club but not employed by it. Tell us how your rides are run and we will confirm how they are treated.
The land manager wants us named on an agreement. Can you handle that?
Yes. Certificates and additional insured wording for municipalities, Crown land and private landowners are routine for trail societies and advocacy groups.
We run junior programs. What changes?
Youth programming brings abuse liability into scope, and carriers generally expect screening and supervision practices as a condition of coverage.
We hold a race series. Is that included?
Events usually sit outside a general club policy and need event coverage, either added to your annual arrangement or written separately. Tell us your calendar and we will structure it once.
Still have a question from your board?

Not sure what your organisation is actually covered for?
The review is complimentary. Bring the findings to your board.
