Cycling Event Insurance in Canada
Event liability for charity rides, Gran Fondos, races and one-off gatherings — plus exhibitor coverage when you are attending someone else’s event. Single event or annual operations.
This Coverage is Designed For
(OVERVIEW)
Whether you are running the event or attending it, event liability is its own exposure — and usually sits outside your normal business insurance.
Ride and fondo organisers
Charity bike rides and fundraisers, Gran Fondos and mass-participation road events, festivals, multi-day gatherings and community ride days — a single date or a whole season under one arrangement.
Race organisers
XC, DH, enduro, cyclocross and gravel, where participant liability, permit wording and land manager requirements all have to line up before race day.
Clubs, shops and exhibitors
Clubs holding events outside their normal activities, bike shops running something beyond day-to-day retail, skills clinics and camps run standalone, and exhibitors attending trade shows and demo days.
What’s Covered
Event liability (CGL)
Third-party bodily injury and property damage arising at your event. The base cover a permit or a venue will ask you to produce.
Participant liability
Whether riders taking part are covered, as distinct from spectators and the public. Standard event policies frequently exclude participants, and for a race that is nearly everyone present.
Liquor liability
Where alcohol is served at your event. Most venues and municipalities will require it before they approve the date.
Exhibitor coverage
A supplement for businesses attending one-time events, where you already carry business insurance. Organisers typically require their own certificate naming them.
Single event or annual
Cover one date or a whole season of events under one arrangement. Usually simpler once you are running more than two or three dates.
Optional add-ons
- Additional insured wording for municipalities, parks and land managers
- Event cancellation — wildfire smoke and extreme heat now cancel Canadian events routinely
- Volunteer coverage for marshals, course crew and sign-up staff
- Equipment and property in transit — timing gear, barriers, signage, tents
- Non-owned auto for volunteer and staff vehicles
- Abuse liability where the event involves minors
- Directors & officers for the society or committee organising the event
What’s not covered
- Participants’ own injuries and their own bikes — riders need their own accident, travel medical and bike coverage
- Cancellation for weather or any other reason unless specifically added
- Vehicles requiring provincial plates
- Workers’ compensation — statutory through your provincial board

Event Insurance FAQs
Still have a question?
Send us your permit wording or your event details and we will tell you what it needs. No obligation.
Our permit requires $5 million and names the city as additional insured. Can you do that?
Yes — this is the most common request we handle for events. Send us the permit wording rather than just the number, because municipalities often ask for specific language that a standard certificate will not satisfy.
Are the riders taking part actually covered?
This is the question to ask any event insurer, and the answer depends on whether participant liability is included. Many standard event policies cover spectators and the public but exclude the people competing.
We already have business insurance and just want to exhibit at a show. Do we need this?
Usually yes, as a supplement. Attending an event as an exhibitor often falls outside your normal business activities, and organisers typically require their own certificate naming them.
What about our volunteers?
Volunteers are often outside both your workers’ compensation registration and the third-party definition in a standard liability policy. If you are running marshals and course crew, tell us and we will address it directly.
We are serving beer at the finish. Does that change things?
Yes. Liquor liability can be added where alcohol is served, and most venues and municipalities will require it before they approve the event.
What happens if wildfire smoke cancels our event?
Standard event liability does not respond to cancellation — that is a separate coverage. Given how often Canadian events are now affected by smoke and heat, it is worth pricing.
We run several events a year. Do we need a policy for each one?
Not necessarily. We can cover a single event or set you up as an annual organisation, which is usually simpler and cheaper once you are running more than two or three dates.
How far ahead should we start?
As early as you have dates and a rough participant count. Permit deadlines tend to arrive sooner than organisers expect, and last-minute placements leave fewer options.
