Home Insurance for Cyclists in Canada
Complimentary reviews and recommendations for Canadian homeowners, condo owners and tenants
Home, condo and tenant coverage from a broker who knows what your bikes are worth — including theft while they are in use, away from your property.
This Coverage is Designed For
(OVERVIEW)
Three different situations, three different policies — and in all three, most standard coverage treats your bikes as ordinary sports equipment.
Homeowners in detached properties
Coverage built around your rebuild cost, with bikes stored in garages, sheds and on wall mounts accounted for properly — not treated as ordinary sports equipment.
Condo and townhouse owners
Strata rules, shared common areas and locker storage, plus the loss assessment and deductible coverage your building’s master policy leaves to you.
Tenants and renters
Contents, liability and living expenses, including where your landlord requires proof of coverage as a condition of the lease.
What’s Covered
Bikes away from home, in use
We provide policies designed for theft while items are in use, away from your property. Minimum recommendation of $3,000 per bike, often with no cap on bike values where total personal property is sufficient.
Personal property, including bikes
Provided as a percentage of your rebuild cost. Standard policies limit sports equipment per item and often insure bikes only while at home in storage.
Dwelling and building
Set at rebuild cost, not market value. The rebuild figure sets the tone for the rest of the policy.
Strata-specific coverage
Loss assessment, difference in deductible and special levy protection, for when the building comes to owners after a loss. Condo and townhouse only.
Personal liability
Being sued for bodily injury or property damage. Particularly important for condo owners with shared common areas.
Living expenses and detached structures
Additional living expenses and detached structures, both set as a percentage of rebuild cost.
Optional add-ons
- Earthquake and flood coverage
- Scheduled items for high-value individual bikes
- Higher-wattage e-bike endorsement — bikes over 500W generally need to be endorsed by reviewing the principal residence policy
What’s not covered
- Wear, tear and mechanical breakdown
- Bikes used commercially — if you coach, guide or deliver on your bike, a home policy will not respond. That needs commercial coverage, and we can help.
- Crash damage while riding — home policies respond to theft and named perils, not to you crashing a bicycle. Let’s discuss your options.
- Business activity run from the home without an endorsement

Home Insurance FAQs
Still have a question?
Ask us anything about your property, your bikes or your strata. No obligation.
Is my bike covered if it is stolen away from home?
Under many standard policies, no — bikes are often insured only while at home in storage, with a low per-item limit on sports equipment. The policies we recommend are designed for theft while items are in use, away from your property.
How much are my bikes covered for?
Our recommendations start at a minimum of $3,000 per bike, and often have no cap on individual bike values provided your total personal property coverage is high enough. Tell us what is in the garage and we will size it properly.
I have an e-bike over 500 watts. Does that change anything?
Yes. Higher-wattage e-bikes usually need to be specifically endorsed, which we do by reviewing your principal residence policy. Do not assume it is included by default.
Do I need Sundays if I already have home insurance?
It depends on how you ride. Home coverage responds to theft and named perils; it will not respond if you crash and damage the bike, and limits can fall short on high-value builds. Sundays is built for the riding part. We will tell you honestly which one fits.
Will claiming for a stolen bike affect my home premium?
A claim against your home policy forms part of your property claims history. This is one of the practical reasons riders with valuable bikes often prefer standalone bike coverage.
My landlord says I need tenant insurance. Is that legal?
Yes, and it is common — tenant insurance is frequently mandated by landlords in BC. It also covers considerably more than contents, including additional living expenses if you have to move unexpectedly, and personal liability.
I own a condo. Is the building’s policy enough?
No. Strata corporations carry a master policy, but certain coverages require your participation — and if the building suffers a loss, owners can be asked for a share of the cost or the deductible. Loss assessment, difference in deductible and special levy protection all exist for that.
I coach or deliver on my bike. Am I covered?
Not under a home policy. Commercial use falls outside personal lines, and that applies whether you are guiding, coaching or making deliveries. We can arrange the right commercial coverage instead.
